401k Contribution Limit For Nearly Retiring Employees
Most people work hard everyday for the purpose of saving money for retirement. What would happen if you weren’t able to start saving early in your life? What would happen if you don’t have enough retirement savings yet and you’re already nearing retirement? The US government allows 401k participants who’ll be retiring soon to make a catch-up contribution, because they recognize this possible need of some industrious employees.
The 401k contribution limits on the standard pre-tax salary deferral set by the IRS this year is $16,500 for a traditional or a safe harbor plan. Those who are on a SIMPLE 401k can contribute only up to $16,500. But employees who are at least 50 years of age can make a catch-up contribution to add to their standard pre-tax deferral. The catch-up ceiling is $5,500 for a traditional or a safe harbor plan and $2,500 for a SIMPLE 401k. So, if you’re a traditional 401k participant who’s at least aged 50, it is possible for you to contribute $22,500 from your pre-tax salary alone.
If provided in your plan, You Can give more contributions by using part of your post-tax salary. The only general rule to follow is that your pre-tax and post-tax contributions must not exceed the total 401k contribution limit set for the year. For this year, 2011, the ceiling for all 401k contributions is at $49,000 or 100% of your total compensation, whichever is less.
