victorian era?!?
what were some of the religions in the victorian era?! i have been searching forever and theres hardly like any info. and also! what are some of the different issues women faced during the victorian era?!
The principal religion of Victorian England was Christianity. The established religion was that represented by the Church of England. However Methodism was still very strong and there were numerous other sects. Victorian England also saw the emancipation of Catholics (they got more rights during the Victorian period).
The first population census of Victorian Britain also incorporated a religious census so there is, in fact, fantastically good data on population and religion - you just havent found it - try searching on 1851 census or looking at a text book like mid Victoran Britain by Geoffrey Best and you will learn a lot.
Ironically, as the Victorian period went on it was recognised that the population was expanding but church attendances were declining. Initially it was thought that this was because the existing churches were in the wrong places - away from the population centre of the industrial Revolution and a massive programme of Church building was undertaken. In fact church attendances continued to decline as the findings of Darwin began to have an impact in an increasingly secular period.
In terms of the issues faced by women in Victorian England it is easier to ask what issues they didnt face. Until relatively late in the period a married woman could not legally hold any property of her own - all her property was legally that of her husband.
Womens education was heavily biased towards the domestic arts and household management in so far as it existed at all at the begining of the period but, as the century progressed some movement was made toward fuller and more equal education in state schools.
Lack of information about sex and reproduction meant that married life was a vicious cycle of pregnancy and birth for many women. The high rate of child and infant mortality meant that grief was no stranger to every family. During the period however, advances in medicine and sanitation meant that health improved and pioneering work in family planning by Marie Stopes meant that the control of fertility was better understood.
