Medicinal Herbs And There Uses
Herbal medicines were used in every civilization on Earth, from Iron Age man through the industrial age. With the recent focus on using herbs to advance swine flu prevention herbs are gettin a lot more attention these days. As a question of fact, they are still used as medicines in much of the world. In developing countries, herbs are the most readily-available medicines and are often dispensed by prescription. And, even in some areas of the developed world, medicinal herbs are still suggested by doctors. German doctors often prescribe herbs in place of synthesized medications. And in the rest of the West, medicinal herbs are making a comeback for those interested in alternative health solutions.
Herbs were used by prehistoric humans, who had a surprising knowledge of the many medicinal uses of herbs. Tribal knowledge of medicinal plants was compiled over thousands of years until modern medical science discovered how useful herbs and plants are to healing and treating symptoms. The modern pharmaceutical industry relies heavily on plants and plant-based compounds that mix synthesized ingredients with natural plant materials.
Numerous Eastern civilizations recorded the herbs that constituted the most eminent medicinal value. In China, circa 2735 B.C., one of the most important works on herbal medicine was written by Emperor Shen Nong. The work described many herbs that are still used today, such as Ma Huang, known today as ephedra. In Babylon, circa 1800 B.C., King Hammurabi wrote another comprehensive guide to medicinal herbs. Many of the plants he recorded and wrote about are still used today to treat various disorders.
Other ancient descriptions of medicinal herbs and plants have been found in Egypt and Mesopotamia. In Egypt, hieroglyphics specifying the use of caraway, senna pods and other plant-based medications have been found on ancient walls.
In the West, medieval men and women Had Little to use for illnesses except their own herb gardens. These gardens were essential to keep up the health of the family, and each garden was tended with care to keep the herbs ready to use as needed. The knowledge of herbs was passed down in families based on which plants had been the most successful for soothing fevers, healing infections and settling digestive problems. With very few physicians available, and a limited knowledge of the body among those physicians, many people’s lives depended on the availability of medicinal plants in times of illness.
the Renaissance and into the Age of Discovery, the study of medicinal herbs became more thorough and accessible. Books were written for distribution to the layperson, and everyone benefited from the collected knowledge. Today, doctors rely mainly on medications formulated by pharmaceutical companies. However, a quarter of those medications have plant material as at least one ingredient. In all the years that humans have studied medicine, plants are still what we turn to for medicinal relief
