Patterns And Hues Must Be Chosen Carefully Before You Begin Stitching Your Quilt

Good-quality material for the quilter is highly desirable, because when it comes to quilting, quality really is important when choosing materials.

Fading color can be a problem when you decide to use anything else but good-quality fabric. You may end up at a loss once you begin working with a cheaper fabric, but short of throwing out what you’ve sewn and starting over, you’re stuck with the fabrics you chose.

One of the better selections for the backing and top of the quilt is 100 percent cotton because it’s simple to cut, iron and stitch, and You Can find it everywhere. You might try to save some pennies by going with fabrics not made from natural fibers, but non-natural fibers and synthetic blends wrinkle and shed their visual appeal.

For quilting fabric, gravitate toward colors that are all approximately the same temperature, and avoid pairing up tones that don’t get along very well, such as green and red. When you’re choosing fabric by the yard, think about color relationships and choose colors that all come from the same palette and perhaps echo your favorite colors from the environment. Your quilt will have a more harmonious color range if you choose cool shades such as blue, green and violet, or warm shades such as brown, red or ochre.

The difficulty with making color choices often is that some colors can appear light in tone when looked at alone, but the same color looks dark when it’s positioned next to another color. The solution is merely visiting a stationery store and purchasing a translucent red thesis cover, through which you will view slices of the fabric you plan to use.

You’ll begin to notice which colors look too washed out or too dark because the red plastic makes colors easier to study and compare. This test will enable you to evaluate whether your choices are actually going to work together of if certain colors are at odds with others.

When browsing patterns, determine if the ones you pick will be small, large or something in between, because the ocular rhythms your patterns set up will be quite important. You’ll certainly want to use all small patterns or a variety of large, middling and small together, either of which can produce a harmonious pattern.

However, if you opt for a number of small prints and one large pattern, or the other way around, your quilt is more likely to appear off-balance than it would be if you more painstakingly integrate pattern scale into your design. If you bind together one portion of your quilt using minute amounts of your chosen fabric at first, you can decide whether color and pattern harmonies are working well together.

Let your eyes be the arbiter as you examine the color and pattern harmonies, and when You Are satisfied with both, begin to stitch that quilt you have designed.
