Relationship Survival Tips Following Your First Baby
The arrival of the first baby has been identified as one of the toughest problems that a relationship can face.
Couples anticipate the arrival of their first baby with great joy and excitement mixed with a little fear of their future responsibilities. We hear stories from others about how hard parenting is and though we recognize this, we also harbour a secret belief that we will probably do it better! Few couples talk about the challenges that their baby will bring to both their own lives as well as the relationship.
Once the excitement of birth has settled, the reality of a child-centred life takes over. The operative words here are "child centred life". Your new baby will determine when you get up, when you rest, and in the early days even when you toilet and shower! It's no surprise that after a couple years relationships often starts to show signs of strain and stress.
Generally couples are uncertain about expressing their feelings on these matters, and when they do, their conversations can quickly escalate into resentment and frustration. Many previously happy couples find themselves at the threshold of despair. Unresolved conflict may in time lead to couples ultimately deciding to split.
The most typical issues include
- Sleep deprivation
- Absence of intimacy and tenderness
- Loss of energy and motivation
- Increased arguing,
- Difficulty negotiating roles and responsibilities
- Feeling isolated alone
The great news is that most relationships don't fall apart after the arrival of a baby. Most couples do manage the changes and challenges. Refocusing on the marriage is the reason for their achievement and they make a practice of it as their baby grows.
Tips on how to refocus
1. First and most critically, remember to Make Your relationship a priority.
2. Communicate - talk with one another about what You Are feeling and experiencing; listen to Each Other. You both need to feel good about your shared lives.
3. Encourage and support each other - let your partner know that they are important to you.
4. Have some fun - new mums and dads need to take time out and enjoy other activities.
5. Learn to manage time effectively - coming to terms with what can be accomplished is essential to reducing stress.
6. Create support networks - discuss with extended family to help a hand with babysitting or simply to talk over worries.
