Bisque Or Composition Kewpie
Artist Rose O’Neill had her illustrations of the first Kewpie printed in the Ladies Home Journal in 1909. After these events, the Kewpie Doll augmented in popularity. It was 3 years later, in Ohrdurf, Germany, that the dolls were first made out of bisque. Around the 1860's, French and German toy makers accepted the bisque used to make the dolls. Thus, when the Borgfeldt Company completed talks with Rose O'Neill to produce the doll; Borgfeldt's affiliates in Germany also created the earliest Kewpie Bisque Dolls.
Since Germany was not able to meet the supply and demand of manufacturing after World War I, the US did not import the German Dolls any longer. The Americans subsequently began manufacturing the Kewpies themselves, along with Joseph Kallus's Cameo Doll Company as among the list of front runners.
The making of the Kewpie Dolls changed with the shifting of material usage. Rather than bisque, the Americans turned to different types of compounds Just Like vinyl and composition. The reason is that bisque is expensive and difficult to work with because it's a delicate substance. A further reason is related to the emergence of a new material to make the Dolls From. Because of all of this, composition Kewpie dolls emerged and became the most popular doll offered by the Cameo Company.
To make a composition Kewpie doll, glue and wood dust is used and it hardens into a certain mold. To provide the unparalleled realism of the skin tone, the dolls were given an extra thick layer of flesh-colored paint. After this, the doll's facial features, including eyebrows, eyelashes, lips, and blush on the cheeks, were painted on. Covering all the paint, there was applied a layer of varnish to protect it.
Composition Kewpies took the place of Bisque Kewpies because composition is a more durable, long-lived material. After this change had been made, children in the 1920s admired the composition Kewpie doll even more. The dolls made from composition are more durable as they can tolerate the wear that occurs from playing with them. The antique Kewpie dolls do have cracking paint and/or composition breaks from so much wear and use over time. The dolls were in addition prone to break brought on by extreme temperatures as well as humidity and the owner should be careful not subjected them to such situations.
In the 1940’s with the advancements of new and harder plastics, doll manufactures stopped using composition. Hard Plastic was established to be more long-lasting than composition and manufacturers all turned to it for the use in their dolls.
