Team Strategies Make NASCAR Winners

It is often suggested by casual NASCAR fans that you need the faster car to win the race. In many instances this is certainly the case. All drivers and teams toil for countless hours throughout the week hoping to formulate the magic setup in order to have fastest car possible when they reach at the track the following weekend. As has been witnessed again and again by NASCAR news affiliates, there are no guarantees. Of course, not every vehicle can be the fastest so racing teams are investigating new plans to find the one that will help them win.

David Reutimann won the 2009 Coca Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway after his crew chief Rodney Childers made the decision to keep his driver on the track while the leaders pitted. The race was beyond its half-way point, and it was raining. If the rains continued to pour on the surface of the track, the race would end. Reutimann, and two other drivers, Ryan Newman and Robby Gordon, betted on Mother Nature.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. eastern standard time, the NASCAR management halted the race, and gave Reutimann his first ever win at the Sprint Cup. When a victory was due to weather-shortened events, there has always been this proverbial asterisk placed next it. For the fans, these types of wins are regarded as flukes and support for them is less intense. The opinions of some fans often find their way on NASCAR news channels. Still, NASCAR is a highly competitive sport, if not the most competitive type of auto racing on earth. Winning is still winning, no matter how it is accomplished and all drivers would certainly do the 'rain dance' if it led to a trip down victory lane. It has become a privileged position in NASCAR news correspondents to witness the displays of amazing and winning strategies by racing teams.

Strategy played a part in Reutimann's victory. His crew chief followed the weather report, and believed that it was in his driver's best interest to stay out. If the showers had stopped, and the cars reentered the track, then they would have went to the pit, but according to Childers and Reutimann, they would have made necessary adjustment to increase automotive performance. Adjustments such as these are rather time consuming. As a result, they would have lost their position on the track if they had pitted with the lead vehicles; as a consequence, Reutimann opted to wait out the weather. Their strategy was the winning strategy.

Kyle Busch led 173 of the 207 laps completed, while race-winner Reutimann led only five laps and was in the fourteenth position when the skies opened up.

The NASCAR news agencies made a big deal out of Jeff Gordon's use of the same tactic. Gordon had used the same plan to win at Pocono in 2007. He did not have a car that could contend for the win, but his team sensed that the rain showers were approaching, and it paid off. If the rain had come only five seconds later, Gordon would have likely finished in second place. Fellow driver Ryan Newman was passing around Gordon's vehicle when the caution flag was displayed.

It may be that the stars themselves should align to achieve a victory on the track. Other strategies to help a racer win without needing the fastest vehicle deal with fuel mileage and tire strategy.

In 2003, Newman and his Penske Racing team were renowned for stretching fuel mileage with a smaller carburetor. Perhaps half of his eight wins during the 2003 racing season were due to fuel mileage strategy.

Other race car drivers have used the two-tire pit stop to obtain a better track position near the close of the race, thus, affording opportunity to run for the checkered flag. Often, it has allowed the driver to make it.

A win is a win in NASCAR. It makes no difference how the trophy was gained, the driver will take it every time.
