Vintage Kewpie Doll
Children all over the world know of the pleasure of owning or playing with a doll. Toys vary in size and the materials they are made of. The appeal of dolls however doesn’t only work on children. Adults have also been shown to find dolls endearing and in fact there are those who collect antique and costume dolls as a hobby. Doll collecting was in vogue way before modern times as Queen Victoria of England was one of the most well-known and prolific collectors with over one hundred dolls.
Doll-figures have been around since the ancient Egyptians, but found mass popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries. Cloth, paper and wax are the materials used for making dolls earlier. A bisque or unglazed pottery is an example of one of the great variety of other materials used for making dolls, explored before 1900. The Kewpie is an example of a doll initially made in bisque that became trendy in the 1900's.
These dolls were based on the illustrations by artist Rose O’Neill and were first made by toy manufacturers in Germany. Composition, plastic, and vinyl have been used over the years to make Kewpie Dolls, but the most precious and prized Vintage Kewpie doll among enthusiasts is usually a Doll Made of bisque.
