A Chinese Girls Name Can Have Beautiful Meaning
There was a time when Chinese women were not considered worthy enough to be given names. According to Confucius, the famous philosopher, women were unworthy of being named and were referred to as daughter number 1 or daughter number 2 rather than being given a Chinese girls name.
A girl child was never formally educated. She existed in her father's home and acted in the role of a servant. For the second part of her life, she, as a wife, was a servant in the home of her husband. An exception was the woman who grew up to become Empress Wu, the ruler of China for more than half a century. She had the fortune to be educated at home by her father. Later she became one of Emperor Gaozong's concubines.
Through a series of unusual happenings, she became Empress Wu by marrying Emperor Gaozong. This was in 683. When he died, the former concubine and current Empress Wu was elevated to the position of Empress Wu, ruler of China. For half a century she did just that.
The Chinese name of Wu was a unisex name in those times. Now it is listed only as a male name. Against all precedents, Empress Wu ruled the country for fifty years. She renamed the dynasty, Zhou dynasty. She renamed herself as well, to Sacred and Divine Empress. Her own women's rights were now firmly in place.
Thus, we have a list of female names and it is interesting to find the beautiful meanings they hold. The name Jie means good, fine, auspicious. There is a Chinese Olympian who won the bronze medal for volleyball in 2005, named Tian Jie. The feminine name Liqiu means beautiful autumn, elegant, graceful and beautiful.
The name Liu, given to both women and men, means willow. Liu Jingyan was Empress in the Chen dynasty. The name Li means plums and is given to women and men also. One famous Li Ha was a professional tennis player. Lihua means graceful and elegant flowers and also beautiful.
There was an empress named Yin Lihua who ruled in the Han dynasty. She was married to Emperor Guangwu. Wen, a unisex name, carries the meaning warm, genial and mild. Lianxing Wen is a Chinese scientist. He discovered many things about the interior of the planet Earth.
Xiaoli is another unisex name and it means to understand and intellectual or light. Red or vermilion are the meanings attached to Zhu. Yang Zhu lived during the warring states period. He was a philosopher.
The days when women were not good enough to be bestowed with a beautiful Chinese girls name are long past. Now women are educated, hold government positions and certainly have names. A woman is treated well, and can advance up to gaining a doctorate. There are signs of equality, for example a girls name can be given to a boy and vice versa. The People's Republic of China has come a long way since the ancient days when women were unequal to such a drastic degree as not to be given names.
