Why do all of my siblings and I have Blond Hair and Blue Eyes?
My mom has Hazel like eyes and Dark Hair and my Dad has brownish-Red Hair and blue eyes. Blond hair and blue eyes are supposedly recessive traits, so why do all of my siblings and I have blond hair and blue eyes?
Oy vey. Well...
Your mom Must Have a recessive gene for blue eyes, and your dad has both genes for blue eyes. Therefore:
mom- Bb
dad- bb
(b=Blue Eyed gene)
(B=dark eyed gene)
Thus, all of you, which I guess is somewhat strange, all inherited the same genes for blue eyes. So, none of you inherited your mom's gene for dark eyes; all of you inherited your mother's blue eyed gene.
Same goes for your hair color.
Also, it mainly goes by your grandparents. Take a look at those genes; they probably have genes for blue eyes and blonde hair since your parents apparently passed them to your parents.
However, eye color is a polygenic trait, so there are several genes that are involved in the final outcome of your eye color.
(That's why hair color (which is also polygenic) and eye color vary so widely.)
